We’ve been annoyed by bugs a lot this week. It made me wish I had Timon & Pumbaa as pets, so that they could eat them.
When we went down to the container where stuff is stored in, we found a log of wood in it which had transformed into a termite nest, complete with larvae, workers and soldier termites.
Anneke had been busy the whole day killing bugs. Ants(they love the sunflower oil), mosquitoes and even a centipede. I was searching on the internet for some tips against the itch of mosquito bites. Then I bumped into this valuable advice:

Voor een snelle, onmiddellijke verlichting, zij het niet erg lang geleefd, Wrijf een baby, af te vegen over de beet. Het moet de jeuk te verlichten voor ongeveer 10 minuten, genoeg tijd om terug naar de hut voor uw vergeten anti-histamine nip, misschien.

And when Anthony and I went to bed, we felt some weird things on the mattress. We took of the sheet and we saw white egg-like balls. Feeling very disgusted, we jumped out of bed immediately(we already had been sleeping on this mattress for 3 nights!). When we told Anneke about it, she told us it was just glue, haha. Sooooooo, back to bed.

When we go somewhere, we go by a minibus. The minibus are always pretty full and the drivers race. They really race. Meanwhile, Rihanna’s voice forces itself trough the speakers. A true everyday’s adventure.

We’ve been going to the supermarket several times. We found out they sell ‘soy chunks’ here. It’s dried soya which already has been marinated. It’s in all kinds of sizes and it tastes really delicious. Eggs here are very scarce , because of Christmas coming. Everybody is storing. And you have to pay around €10,- for a very tiny, frozen cake.

Down at the hill, there’s a man selling fruits, and we bought two mandarins and coconuts there. He let me taste half of his orange.

It’s raining a lot a lot these days. So sunday we were pretty much inside the house all morning. We tried baking some pancakes. But the flour is very strong here. So the first ones tasted like, doo doo and the substance could be compared to well, elastic. Then we mixed more water with the batter and they turned out just fine. Also, we had some fresh papaya and sprinkled it with lime juice from the limes from the garden. That taste: Wow.
In the afternoon, Rodger’s brother came by. He took some ‘bread fruit’ with him. They barbequed them and they taste like cooked potato, but without the starchy dry taste. And the substance is nice bread-alike.
Then we baked some lime fork biscuits, with some limejuice from the garden. In the evening, the electricity failed and all the fireflies were extraordinary shiny.

Monday the sun shone again. So Ant and I went to the sea. This time we had some company because Baxter decided to walk along. While we were swimming, he watched our bags. And we ran over the beach, Baxter with his tongue out of his mouth. In the afternoon we gave Baxter an anti-bug bath. We had been painting a target for the crossbow and Anthony tried it. I was afraid he would hit Baxter, but fortunately all he hit was the ground behind the target. And it was pretty close to the target. In the evening Anneke made pumpkin soup again. This time we had very nice seasonings and it was a great soup! We went to bed early. But we had a cricket in our room making very loud noise. When we were searching for him we were looking underneath the bed. And then we found a death body of a huge spider.

Tuesday we set the alarm clock, cause we went to town and had to catch a ride around 7 a.m. Even on this island, there is a traffic jam in the morning, unbelievable! There are policemen arranging the traffic, since there’s only one traffic light at the whole island. We went to arrange our visa at the police office, then went to ‘Bounty’ and had a very nice iced coffee. Then went to the bank to change money and then to the supermarket where we bought very nice banana’s and other stuff. Anthony bought me a ‘red belly cake’. That’s a kind of soft bun with a sort of red jam and desiccated coconut. Then, at the market, we bought all kinds of fruits (mango, apple, cucumber, tomatoes and sorrel). (Sorrel is a dried red flower where you can make very nice juice of. It tastes like really nice cranberry juice without the sour taste.) Then we went back to ‘Bounty’, and it got warmer and warmer. There we met Roger and Gibson and had a nice drink. Anthony ordered some seasoned fries which were very nice, and his mom ordered some meat pastries which LOOKED very nice.
When we got home, Ant and I went to a swimming pool nearby and had some nice drinks. When you order a soda there, you get a half a litre bottle. It was really nice there. Just sitting, relaxing and enjoying, like a real holiday. In the evening I really felt like baking brownies. But since we did not had a lot of either milk nor eggs nor butter, we had to make vegan ones. They weren’t really vegan though cause the only chocolate we had was the chocolate from the chocolate letters my mom gave us in the letters ‘vincent’. So we used them(thanks you very muchachos) , and the brownies got very very nice. They are almost like chocolate pudding, really.

Wednesday we woke up and started cleaning out the room again. Now our room feels really bug-secure for at least a day!
In the afternoon I went shopping with Anneke. Just with the two of us we were loaded with kilograms of vegetables, fruits, rum and ginger ale, chocolate icecream and more more more. But we had a very fancy dinner because of that. I taught Baxter ‘sit’ in only one day.

Since it is raining a lot these days, we can’t really do things around the house. My main activity is scratching (around) my 168 mosquito/sandfly bites and fighting those bugs (to prevent myself from having to scratch even more) while listening to Christmas songs reggae-covered.

    Magda:
